Dominica was discovered by Columbus. It was a British possession from 1805, a member of the Federation of the West Indies from 1958 to 1962, an Associated State of the United Kingdom from 1967 to 1978, and became an independent republic as the Commonwealth of Dominica in November 1978.^[1]
