The principal and official language is Castilian (Castellano). Other languages are co-official in their respective autonomous communites. Catalan is widely spoken in Cataluña (northeastern Spain) and the Baleares Islands; Basque (Euskera or Vasco) in the Basque provinces of Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa, and Alava (northern Spain); Galician (Gallego) in Galicia (northwestern Spain); and Valenciá in the Comunidad Valencia. Catalan is a Romance language distinct from Spanish. Galician is a dialect of Portuguese. Basque is an ancient language with no known relationship to any European language.^[1]
