Introduction
This list contains Catalan words with their English and Spanish translations. On most computers, simultaneously pressing CTRL and F (Command and F, if on a Mac) will search this page for the word you wish to translate.
Catalan is spoken in Andorra, southern France, and the autonomous communities of eastern Spain: Catalonia, Valencia, and the Balearic Islands.
For more help with Spanish terminology, refer to the Spanish Genealogical Word List.
Language Characteristics
In Catalan, the endings of most words vary according to the way the words are used in a sentence. Who— whose—whom or marry—marries—married are examples of words in English with variant forms. This word list gives the most commonly seen form of each Catalan word. As you read records in Catalan, be aware that almost all words vary with usage. Only some variations are explained in this guide.
Plurals
The general rule for most words is to add -s to the end of the word. For example, nen (child/boy) becomes nens (children/boys).
Words that end with -a, add -es to the end. This applies to most feminine words and some masculine words. For example: the word esplema (candle) becomes esplemes (candles).
Words that end with -ç, -s, or -x, add -os to the end of the word. For example, the word pagès (farmer) becomes pagesos (farmers).
Verbs
Verbs vary depending on mood, who is acting, and whether the action is in the past, present, or future. For example, the Catalan verb batejar (to baptize) could appear with various endings:
baptize, baptized, has baptized
(he/she) bateja, batejà, he batejat
