Main Page of Utah Wiki Project

Task Description

Copy preset obituary paragraphs (templates) and links under the "Obituaries" heading for each of Utah's 29 counties. Then adapt the paragraphs and links to the county.

FYI: Using templates allows wording to be consistent from county to county. Changes can be made in one place and appear wherever those templates were posted.

It is expected that this task will take 15 - 30 minutes per county.

Steps

Step 1. Prep

A. Open a new window for the county page
  • Why? Having two windows opened makes it easy to switch between this "Task" page and the county page.
    • Tip: Sign in to the Wiki first, and you will be signed in for both windows.
  • To open a new window:
    • Right-click Project page (located below the dark "Learn More" button in the shaded area at the right).
    • Select Open in new window from the options

Once you have two windows opened, switch back and forth between them by holding the Alt key down and pressing the Tab key (Alt+Tab). Neat trick.

B. Sign up for a county

1. Go to the Sign up Chart and follow directions to sign up for a county.

2. Type the name of that county (such as Garfield) in the Summary box at the bottom of the page and Save Page

3. Click to the County

Step 2. Put the templates on the county page

A. Copy the templates

1. Alt+Tab to get back to this task page

2. Copy (highlight, then Ctrl+C) the following cryptic template and link codes (NOT in Edit mode):

*Newspapers of PAGENAME
*Local Funeral Homes, Societies, Libraries, or in family records.
*Obituaries of neighboring counties: neighbor2 | neighbor2 | neighbor3 | neighbor4 | neighbor5 ; in neighborstate: neighbor6
*Newspapers of major cities: Deseret News and/or The Salt Lake Tribune both in Salt Lake City

B. Paste the templates

1. Alt+Tab to switch to the county page

2. In edit mode (WikiText)

  • Place the cursor under the Obituaries heading, but above any existing content
  • Paste the cryptic stuff

3. In the Summary, write "Copied obituaries templates"

4. Save page.

Step 3. Adapt the templates to the county

A. Open a third browser window or tab

1. You will need to have two instances of the county page you are working on open. One for referencing information already contained on the county page, and one for your editing. (Remember, you will still have this instruction page open; so technically you will now have three open windows or tabs.)

2. The one you have open for referencing should NOT be in any kind of edit mode.

3. The one you have open for editing should be in Wikitext mode.

B. Replace variables with correct county and/or state names

1. Using the county page opened in wikitext replace the "x" with the current county name. You should have replaced an "x" four times with the new county name.

2. Using your window or tab containing the "NOT in edit mode" county page, find the names of the neighboring counites. These names are found in the "Dates for major county records" chart located at the top of the page.

3. Using the county page opened in wikitext, replace instances of neighbor1, neighbor2, neighbor3, etc with the names of the actual neighboring counties.

4. Using the county page opened in wikitext, replace the instance of "neighboringstate" and "neighbor6" with the appropiate information if applicable. If not applicable, remove that line of code."Neighboring state" information is found on the same chart mentioned in step two--so if the chart doesn't mention a neighboring state, then there isn't one.

C. Blend existing information with template

1. Review what others had put in the Obituaries heading previously.

2. Adapt pre-existing text to bullet format.

3. Determine whether the pre-existing text (that is now in bullet format) belongs as "first choice" bullet or "middle choice" bullet and move/insert accordingly.

4. If needed, just leave pre-existing text alone, but write a comment in the "remarks" column on this task page. (This allows pre-existing text to reviewed without holding up the task)

D. Save adaptations

1. Type in the Summary, "Adapted links to current county" and Save page

Step 4. Update this task page for that county

A. Update the sign up chart

1. Your choice: use 4 tildes ~~~~ or just put the date in the "Date completed" column.
2. Make any remarks (As you do this task, you may have wording or other changes to suggest. Or there may be other content for that county to be reviewed later.) 3. In the Summary write "completed ___ county" and Save page

Step 5. Repeat Steps 1-4 for the next county

Sign up Chart

Volunteers are needed to check all 29 counties, adding items as appropriate. Please place four tildes (~~~~) in the "Volunteer" column next to the counties you choose for this task. This will automatically show your username and the date you signed up.

Please make a note in Remarks of any problems. This allows us to improve the task.

Great question. I like what you did. Shall we create some guidelines, or just review as others accomplish the task for other counties?AdkinsWH
