Description

Turkmen is the official language of Turkmenistan per the 1992 Constitution. The government of Turkmenistan has taken steps to distance itself from the Russian language since the late 20th century. In 1993, they took the first step in this campaign to shift to the Latin alphabet.

As of 1999:

• Turkmen was spoken by 72%
• Russian by 12%
• Uzbek by 9%
• Other languages by 7%
