Description[edit | edit source]

Sango is the primary language spoken in the Central African Republic and also the official language of the country. French is also an official language. The Ngbandi language is also spoken. [1]

Sango [2]

  • a creole based on the Northern Ngbandi language
  • used as a trade language along the Ubangi River prior to French colonisation in the 1880s
  • there are 450,000 native speakers of Sango (1988)
  • also 1.6 million second language speakers

Ngbandi [3]

  • a dialect continuum of the Ubangian family
  • spoken by a half-million or so people in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in the Central African Republic
  • primarily spoken by the Ngbandi people
