- Archives collect and preserve original documents of organizations such as churches or governments. Libraries generally collect published sources such as books, maps, and microfilm.
- If you plan to visit a repository, contact them and ask for information about their collection, hours, services, and fees. Ask if they require you to have a reader’s ticket (a paper indicating you are a responsible researcher) to view the records, and ask how to obtain one.
- Although the records you need may be in an archive or library, the Family History Library may have microfilmed and/or digitized copies of them.

- Registers more than 100 years old were transferred to archives in 1957. Registers before World War I were transferred to town halls. The churches kept registers for the post-War period. The reason for this was the census conducted in 1957. Thus, the archive has most records prior to 1857. There are still registers in the parishes. The transcripts are in the Archbishopric Archive. Pedigrees are scattered in the collection. Though censuses were conducted in 1857,1869,1880,1890, and 1900, there are no census records in the archive.

- The journal "Arhivski vjesnik" promotes archival science; archival theory and practice are at the center of his interests. It does not publish archival material, as well as historical articles and discussions that cannot be connected with the history of institutions. The editorial board strives to increase bibliographies on individual areas of research or valuable individual archival works.[1]
Regional State Archives
In addition to the Croatian State Archives, there is a network of regional state archives in the Republic of Croatia. They are responsible for archival and registry materials of state bodies, legal entities with public powers and public services operating in their area. The regional state archives contain funds of regional administrative and judicial bodies, local schools, hospitals, factories, cultural associations, collections dedicated to topics of local and wider significance, family and personal funds and various other materials that constitute a valuable source for the study of political, economic and cultural history of cities and the wider region.[2]
