The Layton FamilySearch Center has three High-Speed Photo Scanners. Each of the scanners has a flat-bed scanner attached. We also have an over-sized flat-bed scanner for those projects that are too large for a standard-size scanner. Please call the center if you need the over-sized scanner during your visit. Click on the "Reserve" button below to make a reservation for the photo scanner.

Please reserve only one time slot per visit. However, special arrangements can be made for those traveling longer distances to the Center. Please contact the Center at 801-784-2100 for further information regarding this issue.

Please be on time for your reservation. The reservation will only be held for 15 minutes after which the reservation will be cancelled.

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. The person using this equipment is liable for any infringement.

Before your visit:

1. Remove photographs from albums and any sticky tabs if necessary. If older pictures are mounted on cardboard, they can be scanned separately on the flatbed.

2. Pictures should be sorted by size and direction. They must be fed into the scanner in groups of the same size to avoid jamming the scanner. The photos are inserted into the scanner face-up with the top of the photo at the bottom. After sorting by size, sort again by direction. In order to save time, it is best if portrait-oriented pictures are separated from landscape-oriented ones.

3. Scanners are capable of scanning both sides of a photo or document. It is suggested that photos or documents with content on both sides be separated out into their own group.

4. A flash drive is needed for storing the digitized images created. It is recommended that a flash drive be dedicated just for scanning documents and photos. A USB drive, 16 Gig or larger is suggested.

5. Trained staff are available.

Please plan on the last 10 minutes of your reserved time to save your photos. Be sure you finish up on time so that the person following you can have their full time.
