Layton Utah FamilySearch Center Classes


Classes

The Layton FamilySearch Center offers many basic and advanced classes to help you with your family history work. No reservations are required to attend any of our classes. You can view the schedule of classes - by date or by class title - at the links below. You can also scroll down to the class categories to see more information about each of the classes. We also have the options for you to access the BYU Family History Virtual Classes and Webinars library or to reserve one of our classrooms for your group with your own instructor.


Beginning Classes

Introduction to FamilySearch

  • FamilySearch is a free genealogy program that allows access to “billions of ancestor profiles, photographs, and historical records."
  • You will learn about:
    • Landing Page resources
    • How to sign up for a free account
    • How to access and add to the Family Tree
    • Navigation strategies and tips to use throughout the program
    • What resources FamilySearch has to offer (site map)
    • How to access the Layton FamilySearch Center website and services

Home Page

  • From the FamilySearch home page, access menus for: Family Tree, Search, Memories, Get Involved, and Activities.
  • Learn:
    • How to return to Home Page from anywhere in the program
    • Navigation techniques to access Home Page menu items
    • How to update your account, handle notifications, and message others
    • How to access the HELP menu and change the preferred language
    • How to access Record Hints, Family Groups, recently viewed people, and more!

Person Page

  • Every person added to the Family Tree has a unique PID (Personal Identification) number and their own Person Page. Learn how to get to a Person Page from multiple places in Family Tree. From the Person Page:
    • Check your relationship with the selected person
    • View an Overview (Discovery page) about the person
    • Check details - including vital statistics and family relationships
    • Review and add Sources and Memories
    • View a timeline with accompanying map
    • Access FamilySearch partner sites for researching more information

Making Gifts & Games Using FamilySearch

  • Ideas for gifts, games, and fun using FamilySearch and other sites.
  • Ancestor games to use for family reunions and parties.

  • Where do Record Hints come from? Discover where you can find Record Hints, how to decide if they match your ancestor, and how to add them as sources in FamilySearch.

Ancestry--Basic Research

  • Develop a research strategy for gathering and analyzing information from the US Federal Population Census in addition to other databases in Ancestry’s Card Catalog. Discuss how you can find and use information from Public Member Trees. BRING YOUR ANCESTRY.COM USERNAME & PASSWORD

Editing & Fixing Relationships

  • In this class you will learn strategies and tips on how to:
    • Form a plan of action to correct relationship errors
    • Edit a couple relationship
    • Edit a child and parent relationship
    • Use the FamilySearch “HELP” menu to get answers to relationship questions

Merging Duplicates

  • What are duplicates? What is merging? How does it work? These are questions that will be answered in this class. Identify duplicates - where they can be found, and how to verify that they are the same person. Use the Merge Tool and correct procedures to merge duplicates.

  • We offer two classes to learn about adding photos, documents, stories and audio in FamilySearch. Memories I focuses on adding photos, documents and stories. Memories II focuses on adding photos, audio and albums.
  • Learn to upload all kinds of memories to your FamilySearch account & attach them to your ancestors.

FS Wiki

  • Learn what the Wiki is and the benefits of using it in your research. Search by place or topic. Investigate Wiki Topics with Beginning Research, Record Types, Background, Cultural Groups, and Local Research Resources. Hands-on practice will help you search for online genealogical records, learn about migration routes, and access clickable maps.

  • This hands-on class is designed to teach you the indexing process from start to finish. Learn how to:

Groups: Classroom Reservation

Reserve a Classroom for Family History Instruction

  • Reserve one of our classrooms for your church, family or other group. The Center can provide an instructor if needed.
  • Each member of your group will have their own computer, and the classroom includes an instructor computer with overhead projection.
  • If needed, one of our missionaries will help get you started with the equipment.
  • This is a great opportunity to provide instruction on any topic of Family History to your group using the Center's state-of-the art equipment.
  • Classrooms are available Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday at 7pm, Saturday at 9am and 11am, and Sunday at 2pm and 4pm. NOTE: Reservations must be made at least 3 days prior to the date you need the classroom.
