Geometriska Historical Maps of Sweden
These maps were created between the late 1600's up until about 1750. They show aerial views of cultivation and places of residence.
How to find Geometriska Historical Maps[edit | edit source]
1. Go to the Historiska kartor section of the Lantmäteriet website at: Historiska kartor.
2. Click on Sök detaljerade kartor.
3. The drop down menu is not active immediately. Wait a minute or more for the system to engage.
4. Click on the Välj Län drop down menu to choose the County of interest.
5. Choose the County from the drop down list. If you're not sure of the County name see a list at: Counties of Sweden
6. The next choice is between the Socken/arkivserie (the parish or archive series) or the Kommun (the municipality). The default is set to Socken/arkivserie. Most of the time you will search by parish so you can leave it on the default.
7. Click on the Välj socken drop down menu and choose the parish of interest.
7. If you wish to see a list of all the maps available for your search, then skip this step. Otherwise fill in one or more of these last four fields to limit the number of maps.
- Select the Ort/traktnamn (the smaller place name within the parish).
- Select the Årtal (fr.o.m.) the year or span of years that you want.
- Select the Åtgärd (the type of measurement, or type of document that you want). For help with translation see the Historical Maps of Sweden Word List.
- Enter the name of the the Lantmätare (Surveyor) if you know the first and last name of who rendered the map.
- There is a box called "Ej digitaliserade akter" that can be checked if you want to find out about maps or documents that exist but have not been digitized. Unless you are ordering maps that have never been digitized, leave the box un-checked.
8. Then click on the button Sök (Search).
9. The Search Results window opens. You will see a list of rows and 3 columns.
- The first column is the year when the map or document was made.
- The middle column is the type of map or document. For help with translation see the Historical Maps of Sweden Word List.
- The last column is title or description of the place for which map was created.
10. Click on the row for the date, type, and place name of interest.
