Mauritius Probate Records

Wills and Pre-nuptial Agreements

Research use: Very useful supplement to civil and parish records; marriage contracts and wills usually link several generations. These records often fill in gaps in civil and church records by providing information on the extended family, including brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc.

Record type: Probate and marriage.

Time period: 1759-1820.

Contents: Names, family relationships through several generations, occupations, status, sometimes birth dates of bride and groom in marriage contracts.

Location: Mauritius Central Archives and other archives.

Population coverage: Approximately 45% of the French colonial population.

Reliability: Good.[1]
