Notarial Records[edit | edit source]

Research use: Very useful supplement to civil and parish records; marriage contracts and wills usually link several generations. These records often fill in gaps in civil and church records by providing information on the extended family, including brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc.

Record type: Records of dowry and marriage contracts, wills, land, mortgage, business, and property records.

Time period: 1724 to present.

Contents: Names, parents’ names, date and place of birth, marriage, death, etc.

Location: Mauritius Central Archives and other archives.

Population coverage: Approximately 45% of the French colonial population; less than 35% of native population.

Reliability: Good.[1]
