Alabama in the Civil War
23rd Regiment, Alabama Infantry
Brief History[edit | edit source]
23rd Infantry Regiment was organized at Montogomery, Alabama, in November, 1861. Men of this unit were drawn from the counties of Wilcox, Macon, Monroe, Clarke, Conecuh, Marengo, Lowndes, Baldwin, and Choctaw. The regiment contained 202 men in January, 1865, and surrendered with 75 in April.[1]
Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]
Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
