Background[edit | edit source]

The Marshall Islands were under nominal control of Spain until 1885, when they were sold to Germany. In the beginning of WWI, Japan took control. In 1944, the United States gained control of the islands. In 1979, the islands became independent.[1]

Births, Deaths and Marriage Registration (Amendment) Act 2016 changed the age of marriage for girls from 16 to 18. Men must be at least 18 years old.[2]
