Audio and Video Converters

[edit | edit source]

Preparing for Your Audio/Video Converting Visit.[edit | edit source]

  • Please be on time for your visit. If you are 20 minutes late, your time slot may be assigned to another patron.
If you know you will be late, call our Welcome Desk at (801) 240-9601 and let them know when you expect to arrive.
  • Keep the confirmation email you will receive in case you need to cancel or reschedule your visit.
  • If possible, rewind your tapes before coming. If they haven’t been used in a long time, play or fast-forward to the end and then rewind to the start. This will help make sure the tapes don’t stick while converting.
  • Bring a USB drive for your scanned files. We recommend a 16 GB to a maximum of 128 GB. A version 3.0 USB is preferred for much faster transfer speeds.
  • If you have questions about our equipment, click the “Expand to View Specifications and Capabilities” link at the bottom of each section.
  • Our staff will train you on using our equipment and will be available for help and assistance during your visit.

Currently, there is a single station for converting standard audio cassettes to digital MP3 files that you can upload to FamilySearch Memories Gallery. You will need to bring a USB drive to save your converted files.

We use Audacity, an easy-to-use, multi-track audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and other operating systems.
The 2-1/2 hour session allows for 15 minutes to set up, converting for up to 120 minutes, and 15 minutes to copy the recording to your USB drive.
Creates an MP3 audio file and can capture stereo or monaural audio. We recommend monaural if both tracks are identical for a smaller file size.
Only standard audio cassettes are accepted. We do not have a reel to reel to reel player.
The software can also be used to edit the recording allowing you to remove portions, rearrange them and reduce to sections of 15 MB or less for uploading to FamilySearch Memories.
