Historical Background of London's Parishes

Each parish is listed under the name of the patron saint to which it was dedicated, i.e. St Mary Abchurch, will be listed under the "M" section under "Mary", or, St Lawrence Jewery will be listed under the "L" section under "Lawrence", and St Andrew Holborn, under the "A" section under "Andrew".

Resources

Census Records

England and Wales census records for all available years--including the 1911 census are indexed and imaged on the findmypast.co.uk website, which is accessed for a per-use fee. Census records for 1841 through 1901 are indexed and imaged on both the The Genealogist and http://www.ancestry.com Ancestry.com] websites, which are accessed by subscription fee or may be available for free at libraries near you. All three websites are available to patrons at no cost at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, and at some Regional Family History Centers in Los Angeles, Provo, UT, Maryland, New York City, and London.

The City of London Family History Society has created surname indexes to the 1851 and 1891 censuses. The indexes are available at the Family History Library.

Church Records

Just about all of the City of London's parishes, Inns of court, and liberty precincts are held at the Guildhall Library, London. Also, because these registers (to CMBs) have largely been transcribed and published in books over the past century, copies of these may be available at:

Church Records in the Collection of the Family History Library

  The Family History Library has just over 90 percent of the City of London's original parish registers on microfilm. These can circulated to any one of its 4500 family history centers worldwide.

Civil Registration

From 1837 until 1938, Dale Abbey was in the Stapleford sub-district of the Shardlow registration district.  For information on obtaining birth, marriage and death certificates from 1837 to the present, see the Wiki article on England Civil Registration.

Probate Jurisdiction

Dale Abbey had a manorial court with peculiar probate jursidiction over the estates of persons who resided there.
