Letters, diaries, journals, certificates, citizenship papers, family Bibles... before they crumble into dust let Karen Zukor teach you the basics of preservation.  Come listen to her presentation on the factors that damage paper and how to properly handle, store and display those items that are both inherently valuable and inherently fragile. Karen has been a professional paper conservator for almost thirty years and is a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation. She has been responsible for many collections - including fine art, archival material, maps, documents, and rare books - held both in private hands and at institutions. Most everyone has a camera in their pocket and a shoe-box full of dog-eared photos and documents. In this class we will learn how to collect, or "Capture," organize, enhance, archive, and label Family History photos and documents. Ron Madson, a photographer for over 20 years, realized his 12 year interest in genealogy could be benefited by digitizing his family history. His 45 years of IT and image processing experience helped him develop a method for image editing, labeling, and digital organization to greatly assist all aspects of family history research.  With a BS and MS in Math, he served 7 years as the educational coordinator for the largest international IBM computer users group and for 10 years he was the technical education coordinator for an international insurance companyTHIS IS A CLASS NOT TO BE MISSED.  Pre-register at: [mailto:fhcoakland@gmail.com fhcoakland@gmail.com]or 510-531-3905.

Oakland California Family History Center

The Oakland (California) Regional Family History Center is one of the largest and most accessible centers for genealogical research in California, with over 9,000 volumes of books, periodicals, family histories, city and county histories, city directories, plus over 37,000 reels of microfilm and 9,000 microfiche containing millions of local vital records and historical census data from all over the world.
