Description[edit | edit source]
Inyo County was created 22 Mar 1866[1] and was named for the Imperial Valley, which was named for the Native American word for the mountains in the area. The meaning of the word inyo is "dwelling place of the great spirit."[2] Its county seat is Independence. It is located in the east-central area of the state.[3]
