Brief History[edit | edit source]

8th Infantry Regiment, the first Confederate regiment to be enlisted for the war, was organized at Montgomery, Alabama, in May, 1861. Its members were recruited in Mobile, Perry, Dallas, Butler, and Coosa counties. It surrendered with 16 officers and 153 men at Appomattox.[1]

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Companies by County:

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database lists 3282 men on its roster for this unit.Roster.
