The Siletz Reservation was located in western Oregon, about 40 miles northwest of Corvallis.

Established -- 11 August 1855

Agency (BIA) -- Siletz Agency

Principal tribes -- Alsea, Coquille (Mishikhwutmetunne), Kusan, Kawasami, Rogue River (Chasta), Skoton, Shasta (Chastacosta), Saiustkea (Shinwauk?), Siuslaw, Tututni, Umpqua, and thirteen others.

History

Siletz Reservation was established by an unratified treaty of Aug. 11, 1855 and by Executive orders, Nov. 9,1855, and Dec. 21,1865. Other acts and agreements modified the reservation.

Records

Most of the records for the Indians living on the Siletz Reservation are a part of the Siletz Agency now housed in the Pacific Alaska Regional Archives of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in Seattle.

The majority of records of individuals were those created by the agencies. Some records may be available to tribal members through the tribal headquarters.They were (and are) the local office of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and were charged with maintaining records of the activities of those under their responsibility.
