The indigenous population of the state of Morelos is estimated to be at 8 percent, almost the national average of 10 percent.<ref>Wikipedia, Morelos, Demographics, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morelos#Demographics, "Informacion por entidad" [Information by entity] (in Spanish). Much of the indigenous population of Morelos assimilated to Spanish culture and lost the ability to speak their native language.
