Introduction

For the War of 1812, Ohio furnished 1,759 officers and 24,521 enlisted men, distributed as follows:

First Regiment Infantry, 108 Companies

Second Regiment Infantry, 85 Companies

Third Regiment Infantry, 56 Companies

Unassigned Infantry, 185 Companies

Assigned to U. S. Infantry, 5 Companies

Mounted Infantry, 25 Companies

Cavalry, 13 Troops

Artillery, 1 Battery.

Another source detailed that Ohio supplied 21,643 infantry men, 2,814 cavalry men, 113 artillery men, and 133 men in miscellaneous troops for a total of 24,703 men.

• General Society of the War of 1812,The Constitution and Register of Membership of the General Society of the War of 1812 to October 1, 1899. (Philadelphia, Dewey & Eakens, Makers 1899). Family Search. This book from the FS Library contains registers for eight states and District of Columbia. Descendant Members of the Ohio Society identifies veteran ancestor by name, his rank, unit in which he served, dates of service, etc., page 165.

Pension Records

A soldier may have been recorded in state records (see below) or in federal records (see US War of 1812 Pension Records).

The [United States, War of 1812 Index to Pension Application Files groups pensioners by surname, not by state in which they enlisted. Pension cards, which exist for soldiers from all states involved in the war, may contain name of soldier and spouse, military unit, enlistment and discharge dates, bounty land warrant number, residency of soldier and widow, marriage date and place, and death of soldier and widow.
