United States War of 1812 Unit Histories
Unit Histories
Few unit histories have been written for War of 1812 military units. Men who served in this conflict either enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army or served in a local military militia. Others may have served in the navy. County histories or state histories can sometime have unit history information.
Histories of military units may contain biographies of officers, rosters of soldiers in the unit, and clues to where the soldiers were living when they enlisted. They may also provide dates of death of veterans or their place of residence after their service. It is best to look in the Author/Title search of the FamilySearch Catalog on microfiche under the name of the author.
Records of state and local militia units may be located in a state archive or historical society. Records of Regular Army Units with War of 1812 service can be located in the National Archives.
