Guide to Azerbaijan ancestry, family history and genealogy: parish registers, transcripts, census records, birth records, marriage records, and death records.

Information[edit | edit source]

Azerbaijan is a country in Eurasia bordered by Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Iran. It was formerly ruled by Russia and the Soviet Union. The official language is Azerbaijani.[1]

In ancient times, this region was populated by Iranian speakers, Turkic tribes, Kurds, and Caucasian Albanians. The Albanians were converts to Christianity. The Caucasian Muslims in Azerbaijan were influenced and affected by the Persian culture and rule. After 1828, Azerbaijan was incorporated into the Tsarist Empire after a series of wars with Iran. In 1991, Azerbaijan established independence. [2]
