Background

Burkina Faso became a French protectorate in 1896. It received full independence from France in 1960.

The main law for marriage is the Burkina Faso Family Code..."civil marriage is the only legally valid and binding form of marriage in the country. However, other types of marriage exist, even though they are not legally binding, such as traditional marriages and religious marriages, which offer little or no protection to women." Especially in urban areas, couples may do more than one the type of marriage.
