The 40th Regiment, New York Infantry was organized at Yonkers, New York June 27, 1861. The regiment mustered out June 27, 1865.[1]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.
The regiment was completed by taking four companies from Massachusetts.
Company B - recruited from Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts
Company G - recruited from Milford, Worcester County, Massachusetts
Company H - recruited from West Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts
Company K - recruited from Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts
Two companies were recruited from Pennsylvania
