=== State, territorial, and colonial censuses  ===

Kentucky often took censuses in the years between the federal censuses, the dates are listed below. State census records may have columns that were different or more unusual than those found on federal censuses. The responses and years of coverage may give additional information on the family.

*'''1819-1820 '''Northern Kentucky town censuses<ref>Stephen W. Worrel, ''[http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/32875357 Northern Kentucky : towns census of 1819 and 1820]'' ([Falls Church, Virginia] : S.W. Worrel, 1993) [[{{WorrKY19}}]].</ref> including Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties

*'''1870-1936''' (mostly 1895-1910) school censuses for many Kentucky counties. School censuses, where they exist, may only be available at local boards of education. === Why use a census?  ===

==Online State and Territorial Censuses==
A well-indexed census is one of the easiest ways to locate where an ancestor's family lived and when they lived there. You can also use censuses to follow the changes in a family over time, and identify neighbors. These and other clues provided by censuses are important because they help find additional kinds of records about the family.
State censuses are census records that were taken at the state-level rather than at the federal. Often, but not always, a state took their census in ten year increments 5 years from when the Federal Census was taken, such as 1885. State censuses can even serve as substitutes for missing federal censuses. For more information on state censuses, visit [https://www.census.gov/history/www/genealogy/other_resources/state_censuses.html United States Census Bureau].<br><br>
Territorial censuses were taken by the federal government to count the population in federal territories. The government needed to count the population in the territory to see if it could qualify for statehood. For more information on territorial censuses, visit the [[United States Census Territorial|US Territorial Census page]].<br><br>
'''Kentucky did not take any state censuses.'''

==Why Use the Census?==
State census records can be one of the easiest ways to locate where an ancestor's family lived and when they lived there. Information varies based on year and location, but information that may be included in a census can include:
*Name of each person in the family at the time the census was taken
*Street or Avenue, or number Rural Free Delivery
*Sex
*Age
*Color
*Nativity
*Place of birth of this person
*Place of birth of Father of this person
*Place of birth of Mother of this person
*Period of Residence
*How long a resident of this State (years and months)

Tips
  • If at first you don't find a name, try again under another spelling.
  • Photocopy each ancestor's census. Identify where you found it.
  • Look for an ancestor in every census during her or his lifetime.
  • On the family group record show each person's census listings.
  • Study others in the same household, neighbors, and anyone with the similar names nearby on the census in community context.

State, territorial, and colonial censuses[edit | edit source]

Kentucky often took censuses in the years between the federal censuses, the dates are listed below. State census records may have columns that were different or more unusual than those found on federal censuses. The responses and years of coverage may give additional information on the family.

  • 1819-1820 Northern Kentucky town censuses[2] including Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties

School Censuses

  • 1870-1936 (mostly 1895-1910) school censuses for many Kentucky counties. School censuses, where they exist, may only be available at local boards of education. A few are at the Kentucky State Archives, Kentucky Historical Society, or Family History Library.[3]

Census Substitutes[edit | edit source]

  • 1787-1811 tax lists[4]
  • 1800 tax lists[5]
  • 1795 tax lists[6]
  • 1790 tax lists[7]
  • 1787 tax lists[8] In 1787 part of Virginia included what is now Kentucky.

Why use a census?[edit | edit source]

A well-indexed census is one of the easiest ways to locate where an ancestor's family lived and when they lived there. You can also use censuses to follow the changes in a family over time, and identify neighbors. These and other clues provided by censuses are important because they help find additional kinds of records about the family.
