Defective Schedules

Availability

Some schedules of Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent (DDD) Classes for 1880 can be found on microfilm at the National Archives and for some states at the FamilySearch Library. The National Archives has microfilms for Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and the District of Columbia.

Historical Background

In 1880 separate supplemental schedules were taken of Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent classes of the population. These are in addition to the questions on the population schedules about mental and physical defects. Note that those in institutions are also found in the population schedules.

1880 schedule lists individuals by name who were:

                       Insane 

                       Idiots 

                       Deaf-mutes 

                       Blind 

                       Homeless Children 

                       Inhabitants in Prison 

                       Pauper and Indigent
