Given Names[edit | edit source]
- Mauritian names vary based on the religion and cultural heritage of the family.
- Christians may be named after their parents. They may also have multiple names coming from their godparents or grandparents.
- Hindu Mauritians typically have three names: an official name (which is used mainly for legal purposes), a ‘nom criee’ (the name they are known by to most people) and a ‘nom gate’ (a more intimate name used only by immediate family members.
- Muslims are typically given names chosen by their parents or grandparents. A naming ceremony will be held shortly after the birth.
- Names may be selected based on holy scriptures from one’s religious affiliation.
- Some names, such as ‘Marie’ or ‘Jean’, are quite common in Mauritius. Thus, people may be called by their middle names to avoid confusion.[1]
