The records will include newspaper clippings from the Victoria Daily Times newspaper that have been pasted onto cards and arranged chronologically. The Victoria Times newspaper has also been named the Victoria Daily Times and the Victoria Weekly Times.

What Can this Collection Tell Me?

Birth records usually contain the following information:

• Date and place of birth
• Gender of child
• Name of father
• Name of mother
• Residence of parents

Marriage records usually contain the following information:

• Names of bride and groom
• Date and place of marriage
• Rank or profession
• Names of parents (father’s name only in most pre-confederation records)
• Names of witnesses and their residences
• Religious denominations of bride and groom
• Name of person performing the marriage
• Ages of bride and groom

Death records usually contain the following information:

• Name, age, gender, and residence of the deceased
• Date and place of death
• Profession (if known)
• Registration district name or number
• Marital status and parents’ names are included in later registrations
• Date of birth
• Cause of death
• Name of physician
• Name and residence of informant
• Religious affiliation

How Do I Search the Collection?

To begin your search it is helpful to know:

• The name of your ancestor.
• The approximate date of death.
• The names of family members and their relationships.

Search by Name by visiting the Collection Page:
Fill in the requested information in the initial search page. This search will return a list of possible matches. Compare the information about the ancestors in the list to what you already know about your ancestors to determine if this is the correct family or person. You may need to compare the information about more than one person to find your ancestor.

Look at the images one by one, comparing the information with what you already know about your ancestors to determine if the image relates to them. You may need to look at several images and compare the information about the individuals listed in those images to your ancestors to make this determination.

What Do I Do Next?

When you have located your ancestor’s record, carefully evaluate each piece of information about them. These pieces of information may give you new biographical details that can lead you to other records about your ancestors.

I Found Who I was Looking for, What Now?

• Use the age found on the record to calculate the year of birth from the year of the event. Use the birth year that you found to search in the British Columbia Birth Registrations (FamilySearch Historical Records) collection or the Canada Births and Baptisms (FamilySearch Historical Records) collection.
• Look for other family members in this collection. If the family resided in the area for a long time, it is much more likely that other family members will also appear in this collection. Finding notices for additional family members can help flesh out the family and may be necessary in discovering vital information about the direct-line ancestor.

I Can't Find Who I'm Looking for, What Now?

• Try searching for their nicknames or alternative names.
• Search the censuses for the residence of your ancestor.
• Try the British Columbia Vital Records for official documentation of births, marriages, and deaths. These can be found in FamilySearch's Canada Collections.
• Not everyone in Victoria City will appear in these newspaper notices, so it may be necessary to move to another record type.
