Civil Registration[edit | edit source]

Research use: A primary source of vital information.

Record type: Births, marriages, deaths, for Europeans and Sri Lankans.

Time period: 1867 to present.

Contents: Births – names, date and place of birth, names of parents. Marriages – name of couple, their fathers' names, date and place of marriage, age of groom and bride and their birthplaces, names and residences of witnesses. Deaths – name of the deceased, date and place of death, age at time of death, marital status, cause of death, name of spouse.

Location: Registrar general and registration offices.

Population coverage: Approximately 40% in the early years, in later years the percentage estimated to be near 85%.

Reliability: Excellent.[1]
