Head tombos/landholders
These records contain lists of landholders and families, native and European colonial, under Dutch jurisdiction. These records cover 1742 to 1771. Contents usually contain District, division, village, full name of family head, age, wife’s name, children’s names, names of collateral relatives, age, caste, and occupation. They are found at the Sri Lanka National Archives, Colombo. Only 15% of the population actually had land.[1]
Dutch tombos/register of landholders
Lists of principal Dutch landholders and families. These records cover 1742 to 1771. Information contains name of landholder, name of wife, lands held, taxes paid to Dutch East India Company, and lists of previous landholder. These records are located at the Sri Lanka National Archives, Colombo. About 30% of Dutch landholders in western and southern provinces are located in these records.
