Brief History[edit | edit source]

The 49th Regiment, Ohio Infantry mustered in August and September, 1861 at Tiffin, Ohio.  They were mustered out November 30, 1865. [1]

For more information on the history of this unit, see:

Companies in this Regiment with the Counties of Origin[edit | edit source]

Men often enlisted in a company recruited in the counties where they lived though not always. After many battles, companies might be combined because so many men were killed or wounded. However if you are unsure which company your ancestor was in, try the company recruited in his county first.

Many men in this regiment were from Crawford County, Hancock County, Seneca County, Sandusky County, and Wyandot County.[2]

Company A - many men from Wyandot County.[3] See roster of Wyandot men.

Company B - many men from Crawford County[4]

Company D - many men from Wyandot County.[2] Seneca County[5]See roster.

Company F - many men from Sandusky County.[6]  See roster.

A county listing from Steve Ward's Buckeyes All, Part III Revised, is given on Larry Stevens' Ohio in the Civil War web page, 49th Ohio Infantry.

The Civil War Soldiers and Sailors database lists 2,458 men on its roster for this unit. Roster.
