Archaeological finds suggest the area was inhabited in prehistoric times. The current inhabited center likely developed during the High Middle Ages.

Jurisdictions:

  • During the Middle Ages, it was under the influence of the Counts of Sabbio.
  • Later, it was part of the Riviera di Salò under Venetian rule.
  • After the fall of Venice, it was under Napoleonic and then Austrian rule.
  • It became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.

  • The construction of the Naviglio Bresciano in the 15th century significantly boosted the town's development, allowing for the establishment of mills and forges.
  • During the First World War, Villanuova was involved due to its proximity to the war front, experiencing frequent troop and refugee passages. A camp for Austro-Hungarian prisoners was also established in 1917.
  • During the Second World War, the area was subjected to Allied bombings due to its proximity to the territories of the Italian Social Republic (RSI).
