Vendée Department

History[edit | edit source]

The name Vendée is taken from the River Vendée which runs through the southeastern part of the department.[1]The department was created at the beginning of the French Revolution on 4 March 1790 from part of the province of Poitou (Lower Poitou), the island of Noirmoutier, and 16 municipalities of the Marches Britain-Poitou (located on the border of the Duchy of Brittany and the comté de Poitou).[2]
