Background

When Tanganyika and Zanzibar united into one country, the name became Tanzania.

Beginning in the late 19th century, Germany ruled mainland Tanzania when German East Africa was formed. After World War I, the British ruled the area. "The mainland was governed as Tanganyika, with the Zanzibar Archipelago remaining a separate colonial jurisdiction." Tanganyika gained its independence in 1961 and Zanzibar in 1963. The two merged in 1964 forming the United Republic of Tanzania. Tanzania is still a member of the Commonwealth.[1]
