The two official languages in Tajikistan are: [1] [2]
- Tajik - state language - a variant of the Persian language [3]
- Russian - interethnic language - 90% of the population speaks Russian at various degrees. [4]
Minority languages include:
- Uzbek - the second most widely spoken language after Tajik.
- Pamir languages
- Kyrgyz
- Yaghnobi
The highly educated of Tajikistan prefer to speak Persian and Russian.

Alphabet
Tajik Persian is currently written in Cyrillic script. Prior to 1928, it was written in Arabic alphabet. Beginning in 1928, it was changed to Latin script. [5]
