The municipality of Stein am Rhein is in the Stein district and in the Schaffhausen canton.
It is the capital of the Stein district.
Stein am Rhein is located at the foot of the Klingenberg on the banks of the Rhine. It is at the western end of the Lower Lake of Constance.
Stein am Rhein (as of 2018) had an area of 6.05 km² (2.34 square miles).

In 833, Stein am Rhein was first mentioned by the name of Stein. It was later known as Lithopolis or Gaunodurum.
The Stein am Rhein municipality is in the Schaffhausen canton. [3] [4]
