It became a co-ed school in 1955 when [[Wheelock Academy (Oklahoma)|Wheelock Academy]] closed and the female students from that school were transferred there. In 1988, Jones Academy became a tribally controlled school by the Choctaw Nation. Students are enrolled from all parts of Oklahoma and at least 25 other states. All students must be members of a federally recognized tribe. The school is located about 5 miles northeast of Hartshorne, Oklahoma.
