==Land in India==
The basic system of land records in India was developed during the British rule and it has not yet been modified according to the needs and characteristics of present-day requirements. Families and pedigrees can be discovered by using the land records, particularly the khatouni records, because family relationships are stated as land ownership was transferred from father to son over generations. Some of the pedigrees date back many generations. These records are typically written in Hindi or Urdu, often in older scripts not commonly used today.
To access the land records, you will first need to identify the district in which your ancestors lived. Wikipedia is a good place to do this. Search for "List of districts in India." Once you identify the district, you will need to contact the Office of the District Magistrate for permission. It is generally better to have a letter from someone from a government authority or to enlist the help of a government official or lawyer as these are legal records not always accessible to the general public.
Once the District Magistrate office approves a search, you will be able to access the smaller record rooms (kachari) where the land records are held. The kachari record rooms may also have voters' lists, death registers, or other records of genealogical value.

The laws provide for states to confer ownership on tenants, who can buy the land they farm in return for fair payment; states also oversee provision of security of tenure and the establishing of fair rents. The implementation of these laws has varied among the states. West Bengal, Karnataka, and Kerala, for example, have achieved more success than other states. The land tenure situation is complicated, and it has varied widely from state to state. There is, however, much less variation in the mid-1990s than in the post-independence period.
