Forming a local genealogical society was first discussed at a casual meeting of avid genealogists and neighbors, Carrie Adamson and Harry C. Vaiden, III. After involving others, the first public meeting to discuss creating a local genealogical society was held on 7 July 1979 at the Richmond County Library (then on Greene Street). Start-up committees were organized and on 5 Sep 1979, seventy-two people attended the 1st official meeting of the Augusta Genealogical Society.
