Commonly known by the name of the originator, Richard Griffith, the [http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml "Griffith'sValuation"] replaced the Tithe Applotment records as the means for collecting fees on tenements and land. The Griffith's Valuation was conducted in the 1850's and 1860's. This record is also indexed in the Householder's Index mentioned above. The common mistake made by researchers is to cease the search after locating a potential ancestor in this record. Subsequent valuations were taken annually throughout the remainder of the nineteenth century and tracing a plot of ground through the later valuation revision books can often give clues of death, migration, emigration, or the transfer of the property to another tenant or descendant.
