-This is a lecture to help people do research on their California ancestors before 1848. Using a PowerPoint presentation and a multi-page handout, genealogist and historian John Schmal will show that there are many FamilySearch links that can assist you in your research of the California missions and some of the well-known Mexican families. There will also be some discussion about tracing one’s indigenous roots in the state.

In spite of this turmoil, both stateshave maintained significant indigenous populations up to the present day.  In fact, in the 2010 census, Puebla andVeracruz contained more than half of all the Náhuatl speakers in Mexico. Using a PowerPointpresentation, genealogist John Schmal will discuss the indigenous people thatinhabited both states from 1500 to the present day.
