 King Christian III legally established the Danish National Church (Folkekirke) as the state church of Denmark on October 30, 1536.  By the 1700s, the Catholic church and other denominations were allowed to have congregations in Copenhagen as there were merchants, tradesmen, and their families from other countries living in the capital city. The church records kept by the Catholic Church are nearly identical to the [[Denmark: Church Records|Lutheran church records]]. They consist mainly of christenings, marriages, and burials, and a few miscellaneous records such as confirmations.
