ZIP code, USA: A numerical postal code used in the United States. Each zip code identifies an exact post office that handles the mail for a given area. ZIP codes were introduced in 1963 to speed the sorting and delivery of mail in the United States. ZIP is an acronym that stands for Zoning Improvement Plan.
