After World War II and the failure of France’s provisional government, the Fourth Republic was established. After World War II teh Provisional Government of the French Republic was established to create the constitutional structure of the Fourth French Republic. This government collapsed in 1958 over the ''Algiers putsch'' and politicians called on Charles de Gaulle to form a new government with him as Prime Minister. This marked the creation of the Fifth Republic which is still in force and the beginning of the end of France's role as a colonial power.
