Antigua was first colonized by English settlers in 1632; nearby Barbuda was colonized in 1661 from Antigua. Antigua and Barbuda formed part of the Leeward Islands Federation from 1871 until 1956, when Antigua and Barbuda became a separate Crown Colony. They were part of the West Indies Federation from 1958 until 1962.
