The Northern German Confederation came into the existence in August 1866, after the end of the Austro-Prussian War, as a military alliance of 22 states from the northern part of Germany. It was a first true state of Germany. In July 1867, it was transformed into a federal state. It ceased to exist with the creation of the German Empire (''Deutsches Reich'') 21 March 1871.
