The first birth records in Idaho were kept in the 1870s by midwives who sent their reports to county clerks. The counties were officially required to keep records of births and deaths from 1907 to 1911. The Family History Library has presently acquired copies of most of them. The State Historical Society has some birth and death records from Ada, Canyon and Twin Falls Counties.
The first birth records in Idaho were kept in the 1870s by midwives who sent their reports to county clerks. These are very limited in scope and numbers.  The counties were officially required to keep records of births and deaths from 1907 to 1911. The State Historical Society has some birth and death records from Ada, Canyon and Twin Falls Counties. The Family History Library has acquired microfilm copies of most of the county recordings.

Statewide registration of births and deaths began in 1911, and was generally complied with in the western part of Idaho by the early 1920s. Eastern and northern Idaho were much later in compliance. A state-wide index to [[Idaho Deaths|Idaho Deaths]], 1911-1956 is available online. This index is being expanded as time and resources allow.  The Family History Library has microfilmed the certificates from 1911-1954.  Copies of the microfilm are located at the State Historical Society Library in Boise.
