To identify and ancestor who was in the battle of Gettysburg it will be necessary to determine if your ancestor's regiment was assigned to either the Army of the Potomac or the Army of Northern Virginia. The Gettysburg National Military Park has webpages that will identify the military units that were assigned to these arimies. Second it will be necessary to determine if your ancestor was with his unit at the time of the battle. Specific references to the battle my be found in service and pension records, unit histories, prisoner of war and medical records, letters written by the soldier to family or friends, casualities lists of the battle.
